Ball of Colours

I knew I was going to be exhausted, but this is ridiculous. From being rudely awoken with a shrill ringing to being shoved into bundles of clothing … it was one of the less appealing sections of travelling. After getting food shovelled down my throat, I remember being ushered into the very squashy car and driving off into the rocky valleys. Chaos was ensured as I, being the youngest, kept shuffling to keep myself warm. The drive was irritating, long and everyone was continuously thrown to sides due to the snaking pathway.

However, it was all worth it. As soon as we reached the halfway mark, patches of white greeted us. Snow encased the bare trees and rested above the crunchy grass, creating a mini winter wonderland. The further we drove the more piles of white we saw. Looking out the window, high mountain tops that were coated in white powder met our eyes. The sight of navy blue contrasting with the midnight foliage and fluffy snow was majestic and breathtaking. Clouds rolled lazily in the azure sky and covered the peeking sun.

Stepping out of the car and into the cold buffering wind woke us all up. Flurries of snow danced around us and occasionally rested on our bare skin, pricking with its frostiness. Trying to escape the cold, we trudged up the gravelly hill and made our way to the oaky cabins. Sounds of chatter reached our ears as we pushed through the heavy door and slumped through the milling crowds.
The aroma of hot chocolate wafted in the air and mingled with the cheerful laughter of people around us. Every single person radiated warmth and contentment as they looked out the tinted glassy windows to the sheets of white that covered the area that seemed to invite us with its gleaming reflection of the sun. That was enough to get me and my sister to bolt outside and get our skis on, hitting the snow covered fields.

The cold winds blew scarfs hither and dither, creating rivers of colours against the blue sky. Bright reds, greens and yellows rippled with the clouds and created rainbow streams, as if someone was streaking the sky to illuminate the mood; bright, cheerful and carefree. We soaked up the sun before preparing ourselves for the trip downwards. I readied myself, feeling my heart pumping faster and faster as I looked down at the steep snow covered hills. The thumping of my heart slightly soothed the adrenalin that was coursing through my body. I breathed in one final time before pushing myself over the edge and down the field.

Streaks of white passed me like lightening and small particles stung my bare face. I gained more speed and swerved around people who stiffened at the speeding ball of colours. Alarmed faces sped past me as I got faster and faster, the wind whipping my hair backwards and into my face. Masses of lack hair flew wildly with me as I twisted and avoided everyone. As I came to a stop, I remember grinning sheepishly at the people who stared with eyes as wide as saucers. It was that day that I decided that I loved the snow and all its glory, even if people thought I was a crazy out of control ball of colours.
