Luna Olim Maledictum

Chains rattled ominously and a patch of moonlight streamed in through the bared windows and gleamed off ebony hairs. She lifted her head, breathed in the salty air and listened carefully to the lapping waves outside. Her pulse sped up as the moon shone brighter in the sky. She opened her eyes, revealing gleaming emerald orbs that were shining with determination. She lifted her head and her creamy face glowed in the beam. Adriana wrapped her hands around the chains that bound her to the silk bed and murmured frangere. The chains gave a creak and shattered around her palms. Blood dripped from her hands and spattered the floor. She hurried to the closet and retrieved her cloak.

Adriana snuck a quick glance at the door and silently padded across the carpeted floor. A small creak came from beneath her soles. She paused, her heart beating rapidly in her chest like a wildly beating drum, and strained her ears. She kept tiptoeing to the door at the end of the corridor. She walked quicker and kept an eye out for anyone who might have been sent up to check on her.

She opened the door slightly and prayed that no one heard the soft creak. Adriana slipped through and scampered down the staircase.  Faint clacking sounds pierced the silent night and she silently cursed herself silently for not knowing the incantation for silence. She quickened her pace as the house sprung to life. Voices were mingled and doors were slammed against their hinges.

“THEIVES, STOP THE THEIVES!”

“Adriana is gone. They must have taken her to do their bidding. KIDNAPPERS! KIDNAPPERS!”

A groan of frustration left her ruby lips and Adriana bolted for the door, her black heels tapping on the polished wooden floor, blood dripping in her wake. Someone shouted behind her, but she just kept on running. Footsteps were catching up, and a strong muscular hand grasped her cloaked shoulder. She turned and placed a bloodied palm on his chest.  Oscula mortem was the last thing he heard, before he fell, lifeless, to the floor.

She sprinted for the door and whirled around, her ebony locks whipping against her picturesque face. A cold smirk made her way to Adriana’s face as her hand turned the shiny brass knob, her eyes flitting over the faces that drew nearer and nearer. Her gaze found the man on top of the staircase, and her eyes turned into cold emerald stones, hard, beautiful and unbreakable. Her own father, stood there, shouting commands to stop her … to kill her.

More people were running towards her, and she muttered dura tormenta under her breath. They froze in their tracks and screamed at the top of their lungs in agony. Turning her back on the figures, she whispered flamma and at her words, the mansion crackled and flames erupted, licking the night sky and intoxicating the salty air with musky smoke. Adriana pulled the purple velvety hood over her gathered hair and ran out the door, where the blackness swallowed her disappearing figure. Screams and howls of pain echoed throughout the night. The moon gleamed down, ominous and powerful.

She ran. She ran with sweat slowly snaking down to her neck. Adriana ran faster and deeper into the night, the cold wind buffeting against her cloak, pushing it back. Her hood fell limply from her head, the wind combing through her ebony locks. Adriana ran further into the darkness and reached the edge of the forest. She emerged from the dark trees and stepped onto the golden sand.

Her head throbbed and she collapsed, panting. Adriana crawled her way to the tranquil water and dipped her crimson stained palms into the sapphire liquid. She winced as the salty water seeped into her skin. She winced at the stinging pain, but closed her eyes, lifted her head to the pale moon and rasped sana into the cold air.

The waves shifted instantly, and the water swirled bright red around her hands. The stinging reduced and Adriana’s face was illuminated from the bright moon. The waves moved swiftly around her body and her clothes fanned out in the waves. She kept her eyes tightly shut and called potentia.

Adriana felt waves crash onto her body and allowed herself to be swept away. As another wave crashed onto her, drenching her to the bone, she felt her energy kicking back in again. Her headache faded into oblivion and adrenaline pumped through her veins. Adriana was alive again. Monstrous waves towered over her again and again, pouring over her petite body and carrying her deeper and deeper into the ominous ocean, but she didn’t mind. The longer she stayed in the dark waters, the stronger she felt.

She swayed with the ocean until a blinding golden light filled her eyes. She squinted at the giant orb that seemed to rise out of the water, and paint the sky with orange and red swirls. She felt the warmth spread all over her body and refocused her mind. Adriana basked in the warm sunlight and swayed with the now placid waves.

Ebony hair danced in the unseen wind as she summoned the energy from the sun. Her body glowed with a golden light as she murmured aperta. The sapphire waves rose, once again, reaching for the orange orb and crashed down. Adriana felt her body swirl with the energy and her lithe body got sucked into a magnificent white whirlpool.

Adriana didn’t know where she was going, and she didn’t care. Anywhere was better than being chained in by her father. She closed her eyes once more and she vanished, the ghostly echo of finis wafted across the ocean. It was silent once more.
